KEVIN CLARKE received a BFA in sculpture from Cooper Union in New York City, where he was born. He then spent four years in Switzerland and Germany working on conceptual photographic projects and exhibitions.
While in Europe Clarke completed a book about the Documenta 6 art exhibition in Kassel, Germany, titled KUNST UND MEDIEN (Art & Media). He then photographed the Berlin department store KaDeWe for his book KAUFHAUSWELT (Department Store World), published in 1980 by Schirmer + Mosel, Munich. These prize-winning books were followed by THE RED COUCH, A PORTRAIT OF AMERICA, published in 1984 by Alfred van der Marck Editions/Harper & Row to wide public acclaim. He then toured the world photographing night portraits titled AWE, before returning to his interest in genetics.
FROM THE BLOOD OF THE POETS is a series of portraits derived from DNA sequences of artists and scientists in which a graphic DNA analysis is combined with Clarke's photographic meditations on identity, archetype and icon.
His 1999 exhibition at The Museum Wiesbaden, THE INVISIBLE BODY included twenty six new portraits. His work has been the subject of numerous gallery and museum exhibitions and his portraits appear regularly in leading magazines and art journals internationally.
He lives in New York City and is currently developing a book and exhibitions exploring the role of genetics in the aftermath of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York.
